Dweezil Zappa’s Personal Request for a Mid 60s Fuzz

The Freek Out! is a mid 1960s fuzz that was designed at Dweezil Zappa’s personal request. The pedal was named in honor of his late father Frank Zappa and refers to The Mothers of Invention album, “Freak Out”. Dweezil was looking for an authentic Gibson Maestro Fuzztone FZ1 /FZ1-A based pedal that could meet his rigorous standards and criteria for touring and recording with his project Zappa Plays Zappa. These aspects included working along side his extensive rig, cleaning up on the guitar’s volume and tone controls. As well as having an accentuated voicing that could stand out with his extensive band and mixing in the studio.

  • Dweezil wanted to achieve a variety of tones spanning Frank Zappa’s extensive catalog of fuzz tones including the “Freak Out!” album. Plus achieving such tones as the Beatles’ “Revolution” (Super distorted direct into the board), the Rolling Stones’, “Satisfaction” and his ever expanded playing style and unique tone.

In Dweezil’s words, “Just nasty and crappy fuzz tones.”

Example tones that can be dialed in include: Beatles “White Album”, early Rolling Stones, early Led Zeppelin tones (i.e. Telecaster / BBC recordings), The Doors, The Who, 60's Acid Rock, Garage Rock, Grunge Rock including Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains.

Solid aluminum housing, Hardwire true-bypass stomp switch, 9V Adapter, as well as accessible battery compartment
